Sun protection had always been about protecting against the harmful effects of UVA and UVB. During the recent years however, studies have shown that High Energy Visible Light (HEVL) and Infrared Radiation-A (IR-A) is more harmful than UVA and UVB and can penetrate deeper into skin layers causing more damages.

Blue light and its effects

High Energy Visible Light, wavelength between 400 – 500nm, commonly known as Blue Light, is proven to more harmful than UVA. Studies have shown that exposure to blue light can cause:

  • Increase in free radicals in the deeper layers of the skin, leading to premature skin aging.
  • Stimulation of excessive melanin in the skin, leading to hyperpigmentation (dark spots).
  • Decrease in collagen and elastin in the skin.
  • Weakening of skin barrier function.

Blue light is everywhere around us

Sources of blue light include the sun, digital screens (mobile phones, computers, laptops, tablets, televisions) and fluorescent and LED lighting. It is important to stay protected even when you are indoors.

Infrared Radiation-A and its effects

Infrared Radiation—A (IR-A), wavelength between 770 – 1400nm, is usually perceived as heat. As the temperature increases in our skin tissue, it can trigger the following effects:

  • Increase in free radicals in the deeper layers of the skin, leading to premature skin aging.
  • Decrease in collagen and elastin in the skin.
  • Affectthe productivity of natural anti-oxidants in our skin.

IR-A penetrates the deeper layers of our skin

Sources of IR-A include the sun, fire, heating devices, saunas and even when you are cooking next to the stove.
